The Parliament House

Tuesday, May 1, 2012: Parliament House.  Today we got to tour the Parliament House in Australia's capitol city, Canberra. The second picture here is a picture of the House of Representatives Chamber. We were informed of the similarities and differences between the House of Australia and the House of the United States. We were surprised that there were so many similarities between the two houses. The third is a picture of the Senate chamber. We thought the symbolic meanings behind different aspects of the chamber were really interesting. The pink color represents the pink blossom of the eucalyptus tree. In the front of the room there is a statue of a kangaroo and an emu, which represent that the government is always moving forward because neither of these animals can walk backwards. The last picture is a rooftop view of the Parliament House looking across to the War Museum.  When the members of Parliament decide to go to war, they step outside and look down at the war museum, realizing that their decision will have the serious consequence of adding more names to The Roll of Honour, which lists every name of every Australian serviceman or servicewoman who has died at war. We appreciated this in the sense that this shows the respect that Australians have for their soldiers.
